Constitution

The essence of this will be based on the 7 principles of the Awareness Party.

  • We support the idea of a collective vision, held by an ‘upper house’, or council of elders.
  • We recommend a 5 year election cycle
  • We suggest Binding Citizens Initiated Referenda is a responsible way for government to gain the country’s opinion on issues, and they should then be bound to create legislation that reflects that. Questions MUST be written in an unbiased manner, and procedures should be put in place to ensure that. Agreement must also be sought from the media so that they do not influence the outcome of a referendum other than by providing unbiased information.

For those interested in Binding Citizens Initiated Referenda, you can

1. Go to a New Zealand site that explains what it means here…

2. Download a petition from this link…..from the Kiwi Party. (The Awareness Party in no way supports or opposes any of the Kiwi Party policies however.)

The question on the petition is as follows:

To the House of Representatives, we, the undersigned, pursuant to the Citizens Initiated Referenda Act 1993, ask that an indicative referendum be held on the following question: “Should Parliament be required to pass legislation that implements the majority result of a citizens initiated referendum where that result supports a law change?”

  • At the 2011 general election New Zealanders will be asked to decide if MMP should be retained. We think it should. MMP is the fairest and most representative electoral system available to New Zealanders. Lets campaign to keep it!
  • At the present, there is a need for an Independent Public Watchdog from INSIDE the House. It would appear that democracy is being somewhat compromised in favour of business interests. We will see the result of this at the end of March when the Alcohol Reform Bill is finalised. If the age to purchase liquor is not increased, and bearing in mind the damage that alcohol is doing to our young people, then I would say that the only reason for opposing change comes from lobbying from the liquor industry. This is not an isolated incident.
