Fluoride – background information

1. The European Commission says fluoridation not safe for babies

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental risks (SCHER) has just released a pre consultation opinion on fluoridation.  See our two press releases on this discussing their opinion that babies should not be given fluoridated tap water and that there is no safe level where fluoride will not affect teeth and bones.

2. Hastings to reduce fluoride levels.

Leading on from the EC report, Hastings District Council has decided to reduce the fluoride level from 0.9ppm to 0.7ppm.  This is really good news.  Fluoride levels were originally 1ppm, then 0.9ppm and now 0.7ppm.  There is no way these levels will ever go up again; the only direction these levels can go is down.  It’s up to us to keep the pressure on.  There’s no way our own MOH would ever have told the Council about this, which is why most the councils around NZ still do not know.

3. Kapiti getting Report on reducing fluoride levels.

With the return of Councillor Lyndy MacIntyre, the Kapiti Coast District councillors had a majority to support a motion to also look at lowering fluoride levels to 0.7ppm.  Unfortunately, the split vote on the 10th of June where the council did not have a majority to cease adding fluoride to the water, cannot be overturned within six months of the decision being made.  However, since the EC report has only come to light since then, councillors agreed to get a Report done on lowering the levels to make it safe for babies. FANNZ will be arguing the only safe level is zero, but since that cannot happen at this point in time, we hope the councillors will argue that it needs to go as low as 0.4ppm based on Kathleen Theissen’s (NRC panellist) recommendation that it definitely has to be at least this low.  This Report will be ready for discussion at the council meeting on the 19th August.

4.  Leading fluoride researcher and physician Dr. A.K. Susheela states that western scientists and doctors have failed to educate themselves about fluoride, and that fluoridation is a mistake. View here….

5. Boston (SmartAboutHealth) – A new report from the U.S. government has revealed that Americans are getting too much fluoride from their water, their toothpaste, and other sources.

There is a renewed push to change longstanding recommendations and reduce the levels of fluoride in water as it stands now.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services along with the U.S. Environmental Protection have joined forces and released new recommendations that would do just that.

These new recommendations are aimed at reducing fluoride levels to try and avoid overexposure to fluoride among children as well as adults.

These new recommendations change what has been in place for decades now, and reduces fluoride levels from 1.2 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water down to 0.7 milligrams.

Recent research has found that overexposure to fluoride is becoming more and more common across the U.S.

Overexposure can lead to a condition known as fluorosis and can cause problems with the dental health of Americans.

With fluoride being found in toothpaste, water, and various other sources, it is not as necessary that such high levels be in drinking water as in the past
